When you think of Quebec City during its iconic winter Carnival festival, you often picture ice sculptures, kids on sleds and Bonhomme - all set in a quaint and historic setting.

But on January 31, 2015, this famous event was also the site of the ISSF World Snowshoe Championships presented by Atlas (held as part of the Winter World Masters Games).

Trailpeak.com was there to witness close to 200 athletes from 11 countries competing in the bitter cold. The runners completed four laps of a 2.5km urban course that traversed the Plains of Abraham, downtown Old Quebec, Parliament and the Carnival grounds.

Snowshoeing is typically a weekend meander in the woods, so what really stood out when watching this event was the world-class caliber of the athletes, and their incredible pace. As a runner, the event was inspirational and made me want to test the newer light-weight running snowshoes and experience this sport for myself.

There was a good crowd of spectators who gathered to watch the 10K race despite the -25C conditions, so it seems that snowshoe racing is rising in popularity.

For the record, the top results for men were:

1 Maxime Leboef, Canada, 45:40:552
2 Just Sociates, Catalogne,46:58:985
3 Joel Bourgeois, Canada, 47:10:103

The top results for women were:

1 Sarah Bergeron-Larouche, Canada, 57:28:252
2 Laia Andreau,Catalogne, 57:41:899
3 Rosa Valls, Catalogne, 1:00:02:352
