LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: advanced (due to grade) ESTIMATED TIME: 42 kilometer/ three hours ACCESS: Since a significant portion of the Mt. Elphinstone Loop is on Highway 101, the route may be accessed anywhere between Port Mellon and Roberts Creek. As well, the route may be ridden in either direction. For ferry passengers we suggest leaving your vehicle on the lower mainland and beginning from the Langdale Terminal. The Dakota Main is currently active (August ‘94_ and is open to the public on weekends. ROUTE: The route is marked in both directions and features some of the bike climbs. Begin the loop at the Langdale Terminal and turn right out of the parking lot. Follow the Port Mellon Highway for 9 km. to the Dakota Creek Forest Service Road. Turn Left. The first 6.5 km are very steep and may require pushing your bike. After 4.5 km turn left on the road marked 2011. A further 2.1 km, keep right at the fork marking 2011. Continue on the main road for 3 km where the right fork (straight) leads to Field Road (see Roberts Creek Loop). Follow the left fork up a steep hill that veers right and then enjoy the downhill to Roberts Creek and Hwy 101. To complete the loop turn left at the highway and left again at Gibsons. Trails are marked with a small white Mt. Biking symbol or, in the symbols absence, a double band of red paint. Other routes are marked with different colours. POINTS OF INTEREST: The climb from Dakota Creek offers great views of Howe Sound and islands. Views of Mt. Elphinstone and the Tetrahedron are also possible.

It is a great workout and a very pleasent ride. If I were to make a suggestion to make this a more enjoyable ride I would suggest riding it clockwise. That way you can enjoy the views of Howe Sound on the descent down the Dakota Creek mainline. I also recommend giving it a go from the other direction as the climb is challenging and there is a great sense of accomplishment cleaning the climb.

Have a good ride.
