During the gold rush days, pioneers cut many roads into the bush to cut trees for firewood. Remains of these roads exist in many places, one of these leads from the Tarfu lake area to a basin in the mountains.
This road is rough in places, and is becoming overgrown, but can be followed walking or on a bike for many kilometers. Along the way you get views to the lakes and creeks below, Mt Minto in the distance and you'll find a few old hunting camps and many overgrown side roads. You will find a few good camping spots and places for fishing near the lakes.
Directions:
Drive 78km east of Whitehorse to Jakes Corner on the Alaska highway. Turn south to the Atlin road and follow it for 33km to the Tarfu lake campground sign. Drive the gravel road towards the campground, about 3km. Park at the first campsite you come to, and start walking down the right fork in the road. You will come to the view point overlooking the 2 lakes in about 2.5km - great fishing and camping here.
