Ottawa Area SUP Opportunities Abound

If you live in the Ottawa area, or visit, there are many wonderful SUP adventures to be had, apart from the obvious locations.

Firstly, as SUP really takes off, there are several tour operators around town, specializing in everything from down river adventures, to full moon paddles, to SUP yoga.

And this Wednesday Aug 21 in Ottawa, there is the fireworks above the Ottawa river where urbanoceansupottawa.com Ottawa runs a fireworks SUP paddle. There are also the 10km races popular with people who are fitness minded and have the displacement styled of SUP.

I hope to attend the fireworks show from the water on the Ottawa river this Wed Aug 21 with a few friends, and, will report back with a better explaination of the experience. But clearly, SUP can be a lot more than just a sunny day at the beach or cottage lake. Here are a few of the adventures I've partaken in, and some of the other events around town.

. Paddle the Rideau River from Burrit's Rapids to Merrickville (pub after)
. Paddle the Ottawa River from Britannia Beach (Baja Burger Shack after)
. Mooney's Bay Launch and a paddle upstream 3 or 4km (Baja Burger Shack after)
. Paddle from Black's Rapids back to Mooney's Bay (Baja Burger Shack after)
. Meech Lake Paddles where a number of tour operators offer Yoga (Chelsea Pub after)
. Just hang out at Mooney's Bay and do SUP Yoga with Nicole - (resident Yoga instructor at Mooney's Bay )
. Downriver on the Gatineau River ending up in Wakefield (numerous restaurants available)

These are just a few of the local opportunities, any lake provides the experience, but, paddling under fireworks, or finishing up where you have a pub (such as the Baja Burger shack at Mooney's Bay or Britannia Beach) adds to the fun and social element with a group.

Westboro beach also has a beach-side patio and music, and is popular with those not looking to go too far. Really, I've just started to scratch the surface of the opportunities available, and, perhaps next year, a new displacement board and some fun races (5km, 10km) on the Ottawa. Check out the The Upper Ottawa River Race and Paddle Festival held in August every year, and, for local SUP rentals, Trailhead Paddle Shack is a long standing Ottawa retailer specializing in sales and rentals and demos.

Enjoy Summer, it's not over yet! Is SUP paddling a fad, nope, it's just getting more and more poular, and provides a core fitness activity for a relatively low cost either with inflatables or rigid boards.
