Read's Tower is the little ridge you see when hiking to Mount Sparrowhawk. It's a short and easy hike with some scrambling on the ridge (mostly scree). It's a nice hike if you don't have much time where you get great views and gain elevation in short period of time. So yes, it can be steep sometimes.

Net Elevation: 942 m
Max Elevation: 2669 m

Directions:

From Canmore, you go pass the Nordic Centre and keep going on Smith
Dorrien Trail for 25 km, it takes about 40 minutes to get to Mt Sparrowhawk
trailhead. You'll see a rest area right out front of the trailhead.

There is no scrambling necessary, but the hike is very steep, and the large scree on the final ascent slows progress to be mindful of sprained ankles, or kicking loose any of the larger boulders. Be mindful of the cliffs on the edges of the slope once you begin the final ascent, they can be very intimidating.

The decent is also slower than many easy hikes as it's very steep and worn down just enough to make it slick. We didnt have them, but i highly recommend poles.

The views are spectacular.
