Griffith Uplands Trail is a new, lightly used trail with a pleasingly wild feeling. Varied and interesting topography more than makes up for lack of elevation. Trees are an even mixture of conifer and deciduous that will look most attractive in early spring and late fall.
This trail requires a moderate level of fitness and at least a basic understanding of route finding. The trail is well marked but occasionally not obvious or or hidden in terrain. The trail features moderately challenging terrain, including steep rock steps and open rock faces.
The most scenic views are found in the first and last lookouts. Upon descending the first hill there are some nice views of Lake Jocko, but the trail unfortunately does not bring you close. Lots of evidence of wildlife activity, but unfortunately no encounters.
Overall, this is some of the top hiking between Algonquian and Gatineau parks, suitable for day trips from Ottawa. For more like this check out the nearby Manitou Mountain.
On Google Maps enter 858 Hyland Creek Rd. You will take hey 41 to the village if Griffith, turning North at Highland Creek. Drive 2.2 km. Trailhead is well marked with excellent parking.
