Edwards Rating: I (II) S S – Mostly a hike but some scrambling as we got off trail

***** This is a beautiful short but steep hike with a great trail all along but we went off trail to make it more enjoyable and do some easy scrambling up to and on the ridge. It is a rewarding hike with incredible views!
From the parking spot, we followed the trail up to the creek when views open on the valley and Mount Arethusa. We crossed it and followed the trail going left toward Little Arethusa. Once we got over the treeline, we kept going straight up instead of following the trail to the left and used good rock bands and slabs to scramble straight up to the beginning of the ridge. Once on the ridge, I followed the ridge line for some fun scrambling and a bit of exposure but a good trail to the left is available if you don’t want to get close to the cliff. We got to the summit and enjoyed incredible views of surrounding peaks: Mount Rae, Storm Mountain, Mount Tyrwhitt and Pocaterra, Highwood Ridge and so on. We went down the real trail following cairns for an easy and quick descent back to the valley and our ascent route.
From Calgary, follow Trans-Canada Hwy/AB-1 W to Kananaskis Trail/AB-40 S. Take exit 118 and start your odometer at the Casino entrance for about 68 km or 1.3 km passed Highwood Pass parking lot. Park on the left side of the road.

CommentDid this hike on July 29, 2018. Out of the trees within 30 minutes and beautiful views the entire way up. Great little hike in my opinion, was slightly more difficult than anticipated however, long slog up a steep scree field most of the hike (however coming down was not as hard as expected). Once you get to the top of scree field, its an easy walk on over to the summit as long as you stay to the left of the ridge. Our GPS rang in more like 8km and took just under 4 hours going at a leisurely pace with about 30 min lunch at the top.
Had the summit to ourselves, not a soul in sight. Important to note however that the rating "easy" means an easy scramble, not an easy hike.
