There is a system of abandoned logging roads which follow the creeks and valleys in the Mathew creek area west of Kimberley. Follow the main road uphill for 4km and take the left fork. The next 6 km of old road follows the creek and has several uphills and some downhills. After the 11km marker you will continue on the main road to several more junctions. Take the first right to head uphill into the valley to the right, cross a creek and then keep heading uphill to a burnt out forest with good views from a low pass.
You can see the peaks of the Purcells, near St Mary's Alpine park. You can return the way you came, or continue over the saddle and down a long track with some fallen trees and overgrown sections. This will take you back to the Mark creek road, where you turn right and follow the wide road to a locked gate. Continue straight and join up with the Mathew creek road after 2km and back to parking on the steep downhill in 4km.
If you go up left at the gate, then you have a long steep climb up, to roads marked SP1 and BR A, which takes to the top of the Kimberley ski hill.
Cross country skiing is also good here in winter, but watch out for skidoo traffic on weekends. Otherwise this is a quiet area, and would be great to have more skiers and bikers here, so that the motorized users will have more respect for us.
In winter please check the Avaluator (Online Trip Planner) rating: Simple.More trip planner route details here.
Drive south from Kimberley on Hwy 95A for 5km and turn west on St Mary's Lake road. After 10km drive turn right and follow the unsigned Mathew creek road for 1 km north. Park at the water treatment plant parking lot.
Start biking uphill going north. Stay left at the first junction in 1km.
Access is rough in winter, due to much skidoo traffic, but now there is a new invention from Kimberley, to help you with the road access for skiing. See the new Skizee at Skizee.ca.

CommentSkiing is good right now on packed tracks covered in some fresh snow. You can drive an extra 4km up past the water plant now, due to logging. Park at the fork. Watch for large trucks on the road on weekdays until 6pm.
