... to Phantom Ranch by South Kaibab Trail retun by Bright Angel Trail. Must have overnight permit to camp in Canyon and book early as people from all over the world plan this trip.(www.nps.gov/grca/grandcanyon).

Depending on time of year water is restricted and they recommend carrying at least 4 litres.

From South Rim of Grand Canyon my wife and I entered on South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch approx. 13 km and 4800 feet of decline to Colorado River. Took us 5 hours.

Beautiful vistas along route so take time and enjoy trail is generally in good shape and wide however must make room for mule teams on trail. As it is all decline go slow so as to not injure yourself.

We camped first night at Bright Angel campground approx 3/4 km from Phantom Ranch, (drinking water and facilities available) where if you plan early you can have breakfast and dinner there. We were only able to get breakfast as dinner were sold out.

Second day hiked out on Bright Angel Trail to Indian Gardens approx. 4 hours (8km)and relatively gentle incline. (drinking water and facilities available) At Indian Gardens spent the night and enjoy this oasis like place.

Third day hiked out to South Rim on Bright Angel Trail this section has a lot of incline althought not too steep as many switchbacks took 4 1/2 hours (9 km).

Truly a unique experience.

Directions:

Check in at Back Coutry Office on South Rim and use bus to get to Kaibab Trail.

By soul travellerPosted By: soul traveller  - Mon Jun 01 22:53:23 UTC 2009 Not Rated Comment I've done this in winter and it was absolutely magical. I've never heard the sound of silence quite like it. Gone were the hoards of tourists and I practically had the canyon to myself - except for the occasional hiker I met on the trail. We all met up again that night, at Phantom Ranch, and celebrated New Year's Eve together.

At the time, there was a 2 year waiting list to do this but because the weather was bad that year they had many cancellations and I got to go just by showing up (I called first though and was instructed to take my chances).!
