The paddle is a circumnavigation of the island and is never very busy, even on weekends. Beginning on either side is fine unless there looks like weather is on the way. In that case paddle on the Potomac side to be more protected. There is a creek that cuts up the middle of the island and is a great place to see birds.
MD 5 South is accessible from exit 7A on I-495 or from US 301, which joins with MD 5 for about 4 miles in Waldorf until MD 5 branches off to the south. Follow MD 5 south for about 42 miles until you take a right at the traffic light onto MD 249. Follow 249 until it ends at St. George's Island in 11 miles. The boat landing is on the left before the bridge.
