This trail is less than an hour from the center of DC, but provides plenty of scenery and wildlife. Although you may come across a few power boaters in the summer, there are shallower areas where only the kayaker can go. Within the first mile there is a small island that is good for a picnic or a swim. This trip can be extended for many more miles as Mattawoman Creek heads towards the Potomac.
From I-495 East, exit onto MD 210 South/Indianhead Hwy. Follow until the end of the road, which is in the town of Indian Head. Just before the Naval Base take a left onto Mattingly Avenue. Follow to the end of the road and park at the boat landing.
There is a $5 fee that is on the honor system at the landing. The park is open from sunrise to sunset.
