This trail is a great trial to start through hiking on. It is only 92 miles long and the highest point is Wachusett Mountain. It is easily done year round and is hardly touched. You may run into more traffic in the warmer months but that is to be expected. You can get on and off the trail with ease because you run into a lot of sections that are either crossing a road or run along one. Finding places to sleep is a little bit of a challenge but if you plan it right you can make it to the Lean-tos on the trail. They are spread out in a odd fashion but making it to them with a night in a tent is very do-able. I would recommend getting the guide book. It is small and light so you can bring it on trail without having to worry about weight issues.
There are many way to do the trail and the best way to figure out what is best for you would be to consult the book and make your own mind up.
