Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Mass Audubon Society and features over 1,000 acres of salt marshes, upland pine and oak woods, coastal sand plain, ponds, spring fed waters, and fields. The Wellfleet Bay is reached via the Goose Pond-Try Island hike. All trails start near the new eco-friendly Nature Center. The trails range from a 0.6 mile loop to 2 miles in length. A portion of the Goose Pond Trail is wheelchair accessible. Be alert to tides for the Goose Pond-Try Island trail.

Members of Mass Audubon Society receive free admission. There is a small fee for non-members. No pets are allowed, nor is bike riding or jogging on sanctuary grounds permitted. Camping on site is available to members.

Directions:

The sanctuary is located in Wellfleet, just north of the Eastham town line, on Route 6 east. Look for the blue and white sanctuary sign. Traveling from Eastham and points west/south, the sanctuary will be on your left.

The place was still empty of people, but teaming with birds and other creatures.

Definitely the time to be there. Check out the full write-up here:

Downside NO DOGS. Comment What an amazing place. I can't believe I had never gone there. They have toilets that use virtually no water, you can flush 127x with as much water as 1 flush on a conventional toilet! They have a "green" building which I found intriguing. We headed out over the bridge toward the marshes and went as far as we could till it started to get dark. There are a few trails, none too long. I wish I had remembered my camera. Worth the trip to Wellfleet.
