An easy to moderate hike under 3.5 miles with elevation under 600 feet.
The soil is rocky and there is little groundwater.The Paths , too, are rocky with several small streams and few bridges. This is an easy 2 hour hike especially beautiful in the fall. Mountain bikes are permitted.
From the junction of US 206 and US 202 at the Somerville Circle, drive 8.6 miles south on US 206 and take county road 601 South. This junction occurs as the highway veers sharply left- CR601 goes stright ahead. ( This turnoff is 2.7 miles south of where Amwell Rd. /NJ 514 crosses US 206.) Drive 1.2 miles on CR 601 , then turn right on East Mountain Rd. The Carrier Foundation buildings are located at this corner. Follow curving East Mountain Rd. for 1.2 miles to the entrance to the Sourland Mountain Preserve. Turn left here and drive to the large parking area.
