About a six mile hike up to the highest peak in NC and also the highest peak along the Appalachian Trail - 6,684 feet - A steep hike with lots of switchbacks. You'll go through an oak/hickory forest, then a birch/hardwood forest, then a fir/spruce forest around the Camp Alice point. The fir and spruce at the summit have been killed off by insects and acid rain. A bit creepy looking. Views though are beautiful.

There is a spur trail a couple miles out from the campground to Higgins Bald.

Directions:

Trail starts at Black Mountain Campground at 3200 feet elevation.
