The John Muir Trail runs mostly in conjunction with the Pacific Crest Trail from Whitney Portal to Yosemite Valley. You'll pass through the Inyo National Forest, Devils Postpile National Monument, John Muir Wilderness Area, Ansel Adams Wilderness Area, Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. It's a strenuous and beautiful hike!

The best time to go is between July and September depending upon the snow cover. You can check conditions on the California Snow Cover Survey Page.

You'll need a Wilderness Permit to hike the John Muir Trail. You can get information about obtaining a permit on the Yosemite Association web site.

You also need a special stamp on your permit to enter the Mt Whitney Zone. You can get info about the stamp HERE.

Check out the Pacific Crest Trail Association web site for FAQ info including locations for restocking and where fires are permitted/prohibited.

This is the home of 10k-14k foot peaks so read up on altitude sickness and learn how to avoid it. Really!!
